Caring for Our Hens During Extreme Heat

Happy first day of summer! As temperatures climb, we take special measures to keep our hens safe and comfortable.

Cooling Methods

Hens use their remarkable combs and flap their wings to help cool down.

They enjoy dust baths which help them cool down by coating their feathers and skin with cool dirt.

They stay hydrated by having unlimited access to fresh drinking water.

We also provide them with an overhead cooling system to cool the surrounding air through water evaporation, creating a more comfortable environment for our hens.

Living Spaces - Free Range & Pasture Raised

Our free range and pasture raised hens enjoy premium condos that are designed with open sides to ensure excellent airflow. Equipped with adjustable curtains, these condos can be opened or closed to keep the hens warm in cooler months and cool during the summer.

When the curtains are open, hens can enjoy a shaded and fenced-in porch area, which protects them from predators, diseases, and unpredictable weather. The porch playground includes natural features like trees and branches, jungle gym-style perches, dirt, grass, and concrete scratching areas, along with various other engaging enhancements. This porch-style environment not only reduces heat stress by providing ample shade but also promotes their health and safety. Additionally, it allows us to adopt more sustainable practices, such as reducing water usage for grass irrigation, as the roofs provide partial shade.

Benefits of Free Range Plus Eggs

Free Range Plus is not just a marketing gimmick, but a commitment to providing our customers with the highest quality eggs. Our hens are not only happier, but healthier too. They get plenty of exercise, fresh air, and access to a natural environment that allows them to express their instincts. This translates to superior quality eggs, with yolks that are rich in color and flavor.
